On March 31, 2025, Law Number 1244, the "Law of the Judicial System of the Republic of Nicaragua," was published in the official newspaper (“La Gaceta”), in edition number 61. This law promotes modernization in the jurisdictional order and advances the administration of justice for citizens. This new law repealed Law 260, the " Law of the Judicial Power of the Republic of Nicaragua," and its regulations.
The main objective is to establish a legal framework that strengthens the independence and transparency of Nicaragua's judicial system, while ensuring equal access to judicial services.
One of the main changes is the new structure of the judicial system, which maintains the composition and competence of its judicial bodies (Supreme Court of Justice, Court of Appeals, and District and Local Courts), while implementing adjustments that develop the particular attributions of each body in its different instances. For example, the Supreme Court of Justice will be formed with a gender-equitable composition of ten magistrates elected for a six-year term.
One of the major novelties is the creation of a new chamber within the Supreme Court of Justice called the "Family and Violence Chamber," which will resolve matters related to the Nicaraguan family institution and intra-family violence. The Chamber's specific competencies include deciding and ruling on Cassation Appeals in said matters, as well as conflicts of competence between judges and family courts, all in accordance with Article 36.
The reforms establish the basis for the new Nicaraguan judicial order, providing changes that align with the national reality to promote greater efficiency and positive advances for each court in the country.
